On January 3rd, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a special election to fill the vacated City Council seat in Manhattan’s District 9. Voters in Central Harlem, Morningside Heights, and parts of the Upper West Side and East Harlem will choose a new Council member on Tuesday, February 14th.

Important Election Deadlines

February 7	Mail-In Absentee Ballot Application deadline
February 13	In-Person Military/Absentee Ballot Application deadline (9 am to 5 pm); Mail-In Military/Absentee Ballot deadline (last date of postmark)
February 14	Special Election – polls open 6 am to 9 pm; In-Person Absentee Ballot Delivery deadline (9 am to 9 pm)

THE OFFICE OF CITY COUNCIL MEMBER

The City Council is the legislative, or law-making, branch of New York City’s government. The City Council is responsible for passing local laws, making decisions about land use, overseeing city agencies, and approving the city’s budget. Each Council member represents one of the 51 New York City Council districts. Council members receive an annual base salary of $148,500.

The winner of the February 14 election will fill the seat through the end of the 2017 calendar year. A primary and general election will be held this fall to fill the seat for a full four-year term starting in January 2018.
