What to Watch: State Primary Debates

With the election coming up on Thursday, September 13th, one of the best ways to decide who you will vote for is to watch the candidates going toe-to-toe on the debate stage. We’ve been keeping track of the debates that affect New York City, and we’ve listed as many as we could find below.

Democratic Governor Primary

Governor Andrew Cuomo and challenger Cynthia Nixon debated at Hofstra University on August 29, in their only debate before the primary election. Watch it on the CBS New York YouTube channel.

Democratic Lieutenant Governor Primary

New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul and challenger Jummane Williams appeared on the debate stage together on August 30. The debate was organized by Manhattan Neighborhood Network, the NYC League of Women Voters, and Gotham Gazette. Watch the full debate on the MNN YouTube Channel.

Williams and Hochul also appeared on stage together on August 2, 2018, in a forum hosted by NYCD16 Indivisible. Watch the full debate on their YouTube channel as well.

Democratic Attorney General Primary

Candidates Leecia Eve, Tish James, Sean Patrick Maloney, and Zephyr Teachout participated in a third and final debate on September 6, 2018, at the Great Hall of the Cooper Union in Manhattan. You can find the full recording of the debate on the Cooper Union YouTube Channel.

Eve, James, Maloney, and Teachout also met on August 22, 2018, in a debate hosted by Manhattan Neighborhood Network and Gotham Gazette. You can watch the debate on the MNN YouTube channel.

Eve, James, and Teachout attended a candidate forum hosted by B’nai Jeshurun on August 15, 2018. You can find a recording of this event on their YouTube channel as well.

NY State Senate District 11 Democratic Primary

State Senator Tony Avella and challenger John Liu appeared side-by-side in the NY1 newsroom on September 5, 2018. NY1 subscribers can watch the full debate here, but a highlight from the debate is available on the NY1 Facebook page. (Note regarding debates broadcast by NY1: non-subscribers may watch five videos for free on the site per month).

NY State Senate District 13 Democratic Primary

State Senator Jose Peralta and challenger Jessica Ramos faced each other in the NY1 newsroom on September 4, 2018. If you subscribe to NY1 you can watch part 1 and part 2 of the program on the NY1 website.

NY State Senate District 18 Democratic Primary

State Senator Martin Dilan faced challenger Julia Salazar in the NY1 newsroom on August 23, 2018. If you subscribe to NY1, you can watch part 1 and part 2 of the debate on their website.

NY State Senate District 20 Democratic Primary

State Senator Jesse Hamilton faced challenger Zellnor Myrie in the NY1 newsroom on August 30, 2018. You can find part 1 and part 2 of their discussion on the NY1 website, but you must be a subscriber.

NY State Senate District 22 Democratic Primary

Candidates Andrew Gounardes and Ross Barkan appeared together at a debate hosted by Bklyner on August 28, 2018. You can watch a live recording of the debate on the Bklyner Facebook page. The two candidates also faced each other on NY1 (subscribers only): Part 1 and Part 2.

NY State Senate District 31 Democratic Primary

State Senator Marisol Alcantara and her challengers Robert Jackson and Thomas Leon came together for a debate hosted by Manhattan Neighborhood News (MNN), League of Women Voters, and Gotham Gazette on August 24, 2018. You can watch the full program on the MNN YouTube channel.

NY State Senate District 34 Democratic Primary

State Senator Jeff Klein and challenger Alessandra Biaggi appears together on NY1 on August 29, 2018. You can watch part 1 and part 2 of their debate on the NY1 website – again, for subscribers.

NY State Assembly District 39 Democratic Primary

Assemblywoman Ari Espinal joined challengers Catalina Cruz, and Yonel Letellier Sosa in the NY1 newsroom for a debate on August 31, 2018. You can find part 1, and part 2 of the debate on the NY1 website, however, this program is only available to NY1 subscribers.

NY State Assembly District 46 Democratic Primary

Candidates Mathylde Frontus and Ethan Lustig-Elgrably appeared in a debate put together by Bklyner on September 5, 2018. You can watch a live recording of the program on the Bklyner Facebook page.
